## Portfolio

- **Redesign & V2 development of SOAPNoteAI, an AI charting assistant for busy clinicians** — [soapnoteai.com](https://soapnoteai.com)
- **Fidder, a free & simple RSS reader that cuts through the noise and works everywhere** — [fidder.app](https://fidder.app)

## It Still Runs. Nobody Owns It.

- **Nobody Knows How It Works** Week one: I read the code and write down what only the original developer knew.

- **Dependencies Are Years Behind** Current within a couple of weeks, then weekly: 30 minutes and a deploy.

- **Security Alerts Pile Up** Dependabot and npm audit alerts, triaged and applied every week.

- **Customers Find the Bugs First** [Error tracking](https://varstatt.com/principles/diligence/monitor-day-one) in week one if it's missing. Reported bugs go first.

- **Small Changes Wait for Months** Each becomes one task on a shared task board. The roadmap doesn't stop.

- **Third-Party APIs Change Under It** I read the change logs before a payment breaks.

## Your Team Ranks, I Ship

- [ ] Add a CSV export to the admin page

- [ ] Rename a status across the app

- [ ] Handle the payment provider's new webhook signature

- [ ] Upgrade Node.js to a supported version

## Who It's For

**Right For**

- A React, Next.js, Node.js or Firebase web app with users

- The original developer has moved on

- Seniors busy with the roadmap

**Better Elsewhere**

- Native mobile, PHP or Python backends *A developer of that stack*

- A 24/7 on-call rotation with an SLA *A team with a rotation*

- An app past its useful life *A rebuild; week one tells you*

## How It Works

A simple, predictable and transparent process that eliminates development headaches.

1. **Subscribe** — After subscribing, you get a dedicated task board. Work starts the next working day.
2. **Setup** — You share the repo, cloud and monitoring. Everything stays in your team's accounts.
3. **Plan & Develop** — Your team ranks the board. I work through it one task at a time.
4. **Review & Refine** — Your team reviews every change. I revise until you're satisfied.
5. **Progress** — You approve finished work. I move to the next task on the board.
6. **Maintain** — You report bugs anytime; I handle them first.

## FAQ

### What is application maintenance?

Keeping a live app working, safe and useful after launch: bugs, updates, security patches, API changes and small changes. Web application maintenance also keeps up with browsers and hosting.

### What are the maintenance types?

- **Corrective:** fixing bugs.
- **Adaptive:** keeping up with new runtimes, browsers and APIs.
- **Perfective:** small improvements and speed-ups.
- **Preventive:** updates, patches and cleanup before anything breaks.

The retainer covers all four on one board.

### What does maintenance cost?

Software maintenance and support here is $997 a week, no contract. How many weeks it takes depends on how long updates were put off.

### Can you take over a legacy app?

Yes. Legacy application support starts with a week of reading; stop after it and keep the map and the risk list.

### Do you work in our repo and process?

Yes. The repo, accounts and keys stay [in your name](/principles/philosophy/client-owns-everything): I'm a contributor, never the owner.

### Do you offer 24/7 support or an SLA?

No: I'm one person, with no on-call rotation. Emergencies have their own channel: I stop the bleeding first, then [fix the root cause](/principles/diligence/incident-response).

### What if it needs a rewrite?

I say so rather than keep patching. The next step is a [rebuild beside the live app](/x/founders/app-modernization), with no feature freeze.

### Can we pause or stop?

Yes. [Week 0 is a free setup week](/principles/partnership/onboarding); pause when the board is empty, and [cancel any week](/principles/partnership/exit-freedom) with no penalty.

### How do I get started?

Fill in the [project form](/start?cta=app-maintenance-faq): what the app does, its stack and when it was last deployed. I reply the next working day.

## [Teams × Varstatt](https://varstatt.com/x/teams)

App Maintenance fits product teams best: CTOs and tech leads who need a senior on one part of the product.

- **[React & Next.js Development](https://varstatt.com/x/teams/react-development)** "The upgrade keeps losing to features." Small pull requests, no big-bang rewrite.

- **[Node.js Development](https://varstatt.com/x/teams/nodejs-development)** "Backend work waits on a hire." Endpoints, integrations, an API being retired.

- **[AI Development](https://varstatt.com/x/teams/ai-development)** "Nobody here has shipped an LLM feature." A prototype on your data first.

- **[n8n Development](https://varstatt.com/x/teams/n8n-development)** "Our workflows have no owner." New flows, code where nodes stop, monitoring.

- **App Maintenance (this page)** "An old app still has users and no owner." Kept current and safe.

- **[Firebase Audit](https://varstatt.com/x/teams/firebase-audit)** "The bill keeps rising, or nobody trusts the rules." The bill tied to its code, every rule reviewed.

- **[DevOps Audit](https://varstatt.com/x/teams/devops-audit)** "Releases are slow and scary." Planning to monitoring, fixes ranked.

- **[Architecture Audit](https://varstatt.com/x/teams/architecture-audit)** "Every feature takes longer than the last." Why, what to fix first, whether a rewrite pays.
