## The Upgrade Always Loses to Features

| Route | What It Is | The Catch |
|---|---|---|
| Your Own Team | Upgrade work between features | Nobody is free, and nobody wants a freeze |
| A Senior Hire | A developer for a few months of stack work | Posting, interviews and a notice period first |
| React Development Services | Often sold as hours, or a team | You manage the hours or the team |
| **Varstatt** | One senior owns the stream in your repo | One task at a time |

## One Task at a Time

- [ ] Map what blocks the upgrade

- [ ] Update the libraries pinned to old versions

- [ ] Move off Create React App to Vite

- [ ] Bump React to the next major

- [ ] Speed up the slowest page

- [ ] Move the public pages to Next.js

## Done Before, in Production

- **[A Next.js V2 Beside a Live V1](https://varstatt.com/jurij/p/soapnoteai-v2-now-serves-100-percent-of-users)** 8 months beside the live app, one backend shared with iOS. 100% of users moved.

- **Two Apps Off Create React App** Both moved to Vite; one old service worker left off on purpose.

- **A React App Years Without a Deploy** The Node version and the dependencies first, the features after.

- **[This Site on Next.js 16](https://varstatt.com/jurij/p/mirror-your-site-as-markdown)** React 19, and every page mirrored as markdown at deploy.

## Who It's For

**Right For**

- A slipping upgrade, speedup or move off Create React App

- A team between hires, the upgrade waiting

- Someone to rank the work and review pull requests

**Better Elsewhere**

- React Native, native apps, other stacks *A developer of that stack*

- Hourly staff or a fixed-scope bid *An agency or a staffing firm*

- Several streams at once

## How It Works

A simple, predictable and transparent process that eliminates development headaches.

1. **Subscribe** — Add me to the repo and name what keeps slipping. Work starts the next working day.
2. **Setup** — I read the codebase and list what blocks the upgrade. We agree the order.
3. **Plan & Develop** — You rank the board. I take one task at a time, each its own pull request.
4. **Review & Refine** — Your team reviews every pull request. I revise until you're satisfied.
5. **Progress** — Each approved piece goes to production, so the upgrade lands in steps.
6. **Maintain** — You report issues anytime; I handle them first. Pause until the next major.

## FAQ

### What does a React developer cost?

$997/week, for React, Next.js and the Node.js behind them. [Pause or cancel](/principles/partnership/exit-freedom) any week.

### CRA is sunset: Vite or Next.js?

Move off it: the React team's [sunset post](https://react.dev/blog/2025/02/14/sunsetting-create-react-app) points existing apps to Vite or a framework. Vite for an app behind a login; Next.js when public pages need server rendering for search.

### How do you fix a slow React app?

Measure first, on the pages users open, then fix the biggest cost first. Each fix gets before and after numbers: [observed, not assumed](/principles/diligence/observe-improve).

### Can you upgrade without a freeze?

Yes. The upgrade runs beside your roadmap in small pull requests: blocking libraries, the version bump, the cleanup.

### Will it swamp our code review?

No. Each pull request is one step, small enough to review in one sitting.

### Can we hire you for one job only?

Yes: subscribe, ship it, cancel. Unsure of the size? Start with one week: I map the path and start the first task.

### What if we stop halfway?

You keep a working app: each step is in production before the next starts, and every commit is in [your repo](/principles/philosophy/client-owns-everything).

### How do I get started?

Fill in the [project form](/start?cta=react-development-faq), about a minute, with your React and Next.js versions and what keeps slipping. I reply the next working day; if it fits, with a first plan and a call invite.
